As usual Blythe, you managed to capture my thoughts much more eloquently than I could have communicated. In fact, I think when we were talking about this the other day, I may have slurred over a lemon drop, "This whole change... well... y'know... it just bugs... and I just ... well, y'know ... whatever. It seems ... different, meh."

I think the minute you start blogging for profit you forfeit something essential. I understand the lure of "hey, if I can do something I love, like writing, and eke out a living too..." but I've seen very few blogs pull it off successfully. Bland is often the word I end up using to describe them.

I guess I am nostalgic. I preferred the days when people laid it all out there. It was brave and admirable and entertaining as hell. No one worried that Grandma might be reading, or that the neighborhood dentist would google his name and come across a less than flattering anecdote two weeks before their next cleaning.

Damn us all for becoming so PC. Or maybe WC (webically correct)? Al Gore... inventor of the 'www' & third in line for sainthood behind Oprah & Angelina... needs to address this posthaste.

By the way, comments are working for me again, yay!

Yes. Me too. And while I don't blame them, it has made me re-think how I blog, and realize that I don't want to become that. Again, I don't blame them, but it's not for me. I've had a few paid opportunities come up recently, much to my surprise, and I've made some horribly unprofessional decisions by first agreeing to them, then backing out of at the last minute. But the reason I did so was because I realized it didn't fit me at all.

I have felt that nostalgia recently, with a few bloggers in particular in mind (some, in fact, that you introduced me too, it's a bit like you're my hook-up for my blog addiction...). My thoughts are that this phase is a transitional one and that in the coming months and years the balance between personal and professional blogger will begin to get sorted out and leave us with a new way of reading and enjoying those blogs. Perhaps I'm being optimistic, but I think (hope) the really good writers will find a way to achieve that balance.
