That’s not a name, that’s a major appliance
I will try to refrain from excessive posting about 1980′s pop culture. Considering the number of Adam Ant song lyrics, MTV veejay trivia facts and Flowers in the Attic plot points that I have to draw from in the archive inside my head, you’re just going to have to live with a post or two on this topic.
The other day when I was stuck in traffic listening to NPR, the editor of Premier magazine was listing the “best” teen movies. A couple of people called in and quoted John Hughes (thank goodness or I might have had to dial in myself, placing my fellow highway travelers and myself in grave danger as we inched across the 100-degree blacktop), and of course Rebel without a Cause was mentioned, and the Premier guy said his favorite was The Blob. I’ve never seen The Blob but I’m willing to take his word for it that it’s better than I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Anyone brave enough to share their favorite teen movie in the comments section? C’mon, folks, this is an easy one. Don’t be afraid of The Internet.
Oh, my favorite is Pretty in Pink. But I don’t actually own my own copy, in case you’re looking for something to buy me for a going-away gift. I also really dug that movie Fire with Fire, I think it starred Virginia Madsen who recently showed up in Sideways (not a teen movie) and it had a killer theme song. And I also loved Flirting, with a young Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton and a leading man who was meant to be geeky. I love me some geeks (Duckie Dale etc).

I will fully admit to owning (albeit having stolen it from a friend) and regularly watching Clueless. My affection for it, I’m sure, betrays my youth, but there is something still very scathing about being call a “virgin who can’t drive”.
Mean Girls is pretty rich, as well, though I’ve only seen it the once.
Back to travel planning…
My favorites are Pretty in Pink and 10 Things I Hate About You. Also Never Been Kissed if that counts as a teen movie.
I will watch THE BREAKFAST CLUB whenever it is on TV. – Daniela
Patrick Dempsey in “Can’t Buy Me Love”. Can’t really explain it, but I think my attraction comes primarily from the desert setting (Arizona seemed so “awesome”), and the fact that he was a super smart guy that was coached into being cool and cute – and she was the super sexy gal who actually had a deep side and wrote poetry. And yes. I own the VHS tape (in case anyone wants to borrow it)….
Sixteen Candles of course
– monique
I’m gonna have to go with “Sixteen Candles” – there’s just something horrifying and humiliatingly real about the geek who charges $1 to see a girl’s panties… whether you were among the “geek” crowd or the “underwear” crowd, we can all identify with those awkward and intriguing sexual inquiries of our teenage years.
I also very much enjoy and watched (seriously) every single day of my senior year, “Can’t Hardly Wait” – also a tribute (not a betrayal Brian!) to my youth… Gotta love Barry Manilow…
Ooh… sorry – I just thought of the all time greatest teen movie… which I hope Blythe will identify with, along with all of you other sorority-girls-in-the-closet:
“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
Who didn’t idolize Sarah Jessica Parker and Dance TV?!
